 Susie
Mullenger began her Faux Fur Throw business as a hobby, creating
beautiful handmade blankets for family and friends. Then one fateful
day, Susie got word that her dear friend’s niece, Carrie, had
been diagnosed with Leukemia. The initial shock and sadness was
soon transformed into steely optimism; Carrie will get through
this.
Susie then made plans to visit Carrie
in the hospital on Saturday. She also hoped to bring Carrie some
comfort by giving her a cozy throw… and while she was at it, Susie
thought it might be nice to bring a few extra throws to give to
other ailing children on the ward.
 Come
Saturday, Susie felt strangely disinclined to go - and she cancelled,
promising to visit Carrie on Sunday. Yet on Sunday Susie felt
the same way, and uncharacteristically reneged on her appointment.
“I’ll come down on Tuesday,” she said.
Tuesday arrived, and this time Susie felt
no apprehension. In fact, she felt compelled to skip her normal
antique shopping route, and instead drove straight to the hospital.
As planned, Susie first dropped off an armful of her throws to
be handed out to other children on the ward, then proceeded on
to Carrie’s room, only to find an empty bed.
Susie was immediately directed to the
Intensive Care Waiting Room, where Carrie’s parents sat, alone
and distraught. When they saw Susie, they fell into a hug, and
with heavy tears explained how Carrie had just been rushed into
ICU. Eventually phone calls were made, and as Carrie’s extended
family rushed to her side, Susie considerately slipped out, and
delivered the rest of her throws.
 As
she retraced her steps back down the ward, she suddenly noticed
the glowing faces of children in their hospital beds, now cuddled
up with their new throws. It was at that time, a vision was solidified!
“Donate throws, and make a difference!”
Sadly, early the next morning, Carrie
crossed over to the comforting arms of her Lord. It was this experience
that prompted Susie to shift the focus of her once hobby, into
a business dedicated to “our all-knowing Lord who loves us, and
to sick children in desperate need of a little cozy comfort.”
Don’t Freak, It’s Faux is proud to donate
a throw to a hospitalized child for every five full-sized throws
sold. In the first 7 months of Susie’s business, over 250 throws
have been donated to such children in need, and the goal for this
year stands at 2,000! Susie’s beautiful, plush handmade faux fur
throws make a great gift for yourself and others, and best of
all, make a difference in the lives of children who could use
a little sunshine.
